HOW TO LEAVE A BID IN ADVANCE OF THE AUCTION

ONLINE ABSENTEE BIDDING

Did you know that you can place absentee bids online, ahead of the live auction? These bids will be automatically executed during the live sale on your behalf. Here’s how:

1. Create An Exhibit Auctions Account

  • To leave an online absentee bid in any upcoming auction, you must have an Exhibit Auctions account.
  • To create an account, click on the button marked ‘Register/Log In’ – you’ll find it on the Home Page and in the drop down menu, or you can click here.
  • Make a note of your password and keep it in a safe place. You will need it for future log ins.

2. Select An Auction & Register to Bid

  • Now that you have an account with Exhibit Auctions, click on the auction that you’re interested in and register to bid. You can see our auctions here

3. Place Your Absentee Bids

  • Scroll through the catalogue and find the lot (or lots) you’re interested in.
  • To place an online absentee bid, enter your maximum bid in the empty box and click on the button marked ‘Place Bid’.
  • You will be asked to confirm your bid. Click ‘OK’ to proceed.

4. Our Software Does The Bidding, So You Don’t Have To

  • At the live auction, our software will use your online absentee bids to automatically bid against other online bidders on your behalf, ensuring total fairness.
  • Where possible (i.e. if there is little or no competition) the software will bid less than your maximum amount.
  • If there is competition for your lot(s), the software will bid up to your maximum amount. Rest assured, your maximum bid will not be exceeded.
  • If one or more of your online absentee bids is successful, an invoice will be sent to the email address registered to your account.
  • Payment details will be listed on your invoice.

Pro Tip: If you’d like to place several absentee bids at once, head to the relevant catalogue page and enter your maximum bids in the boxes provided. Once you’ve filled in all of your absentee bids, click on the button marked ‘Place Multiple Bids’, which you’ll find at the foot of the page.

TRADITIONAL ABSENTEE BIDDING

  • Although Exhibit Auctions’ sales are held online only, traditional absentee bidding remains an option for those who prefer to leave their bids in the hands of the auctioneer.
  • If you would like the auctioneer to bid on your behalf, please contact info@exhibitauctions.co.uk
  • In your email, please include your full name, address and telephone number.
  • For each lot, please state the maximum amount that you would be willing bid.
  • The auctioneer will bid as you would – with the intention of securing the lot at the cheapest possible price.
  • If one or more of your traditional absentee bids is successful, an invoice will be sent to you via email.

FAQs

WHY DO I HAVE TO REGISTER FOR EACH SALE INDIVIDUALLY?

Each auction is a unique event, so you’ll need to register for each and every auction.

If you are a previous bidder with Exhibit Auctions, you will not have to re-enter your card details. All you’ll need to do is click ‘Register to Bid’ and accept our terms and conditions.

A card check may be done at this stage. This allows us to ensure that the details registered with us are up-to-date.

WHY HAVE I NOT BEEN APPROVED TO BID?

Bidders are approved manually. We check for new registered bidders throughout the day, so we’ll be sure to approve you ASAP.

Email us on info@exhibitauctions.co.uk if you think your registration has been unintentionally overlooked.

If you call regarding approval once the auction has begun, we cannot guarantee that approval will be granted in time or that your call will be answered. Whenever possible, please contact us with plenty of time to spare. If we are unable to take your call, you will hear a pre-recorded message.

THE AUCTION.

THE LIVE AUCTION HASN’T STARTED YET – WHY IS ‘CURRENT BID’ SHOWING ON SOME LOTS?

Before the live auction commences, some lots may show a ‘Current Bid’. This is the highest current bid on that lot. This allows you to make a more informed decision.

If you enter £200 and someone has already placed a bid of £100, the current bid will be £110 and you will be the current highest bidder.

If you enter a bid that is lower than someone else’s maximum bid you will be informed that you have been outbid. You can then decide if you’d like to increase your absentee bid. If that’s the case, enter a new maximum amount and click on the button marked ‘Change Bid’.

If you are the current highest bidder on the lot, you will be informed on-screen.

If there is a reserve on the lot, you will be notified if the reserve has not been met.

MY BID IS ‘OFF INCREMENT’ – WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

If you place a bid that does not align with the pre-set increments dictated by the auctioneer, you will be clearly notified on screen.

You will be given two suggestions to guide you towards ‘on increment’ bids.

Click on one of these suggested values to populate the bid box with a bid that falls in line with Exhibit Auctions’ pre-set increments.

If you’re happy with the on increment amount, click ‘Place Bid’.

The auctioneer reserves the right to alter the increments during the sale but, as a rough guide, Exhibit Auctions’ increments are as follows:

  • 0 to £100 – £5
  • £100 to £200 – £10
  • £200 to £500 – £20
  • £500 to £1,000 – £50
  • £1,000 to £2,000 – £100
  • £2,000 to £5,000 – £200
  • £5,000 to £15,000 – £500
  • £15,000 to £50,000 – £1,000
  • £50,000 to £100,000 – £5,000
  • £100,000 and above – £10,000
I TRIED TO BID BUT IT SAYS ‘STARTING BID IS NOT MET’ – WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

All items will have a ‘Starting’ price. This is the minimum amount you can bid on this lot.

If you attempt to place a bid below this amount you will receive a clear, on-screen notification that your bid is too low.

Check the ‘Starting’ price for the lot and place a bid that is equal to or exceeds that amount.

HOW DO I KEEP TRACK OF ALL OF THE ITEMS I’M BIDDING FOR?

Log in to your Exhibit Auctions Account and click on the button marked ‘My Items’ at the top of the page.

Now click on the ‘Bidding On’ tab.

Here you will be able to see any absentee bids that you have placed on upcoming lots.

CAN I CREATE A LIST OF MY FAVOURITE LOTS, EVEN IF I HAVEN’T PLACED A BID?

You can keep track of your favourite Exhibit Auctions lots by adding them to your watchlist. If a lot catches your eye, click on the button marked ‘Add to Watchlist’.

You can view all of the lots in your watchlist by clicking on the ‘My Items’ tab in your account.

If you have left any absentee bids, they’ll be showing in ‘My Items’ too.

I’VE PLACED A WINNING BID! WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

When you are a successful bidder in an online auction, you will see clear, on-screen confirmation in the bidding panel that the lot was sold to you.

Furthermore, all of your successful bids will be listed in the ‘My Items’ section of your account.

An invoice will be emailed to you shortly after the completion of the auction.  Payment options will be listed on the invoice in your inbox.

Details regarding collection/postage and packaging will also be listed on your invoice.

ARE THERE ANY HIDDEN FEES? E.G. WILL I BE CHARGED EXTRA FOR BIDDING LIVE ONLINE?

At Exhibit Auctions, there are no hidden fees. If you win a lot, no buyer’s premium will be added to the hammer price. What you bid is what you’ll pay.

Please remember, however, to take the cost of postage and packaging into account. The cost of postage and packaging for each lot is listed within the lot description. If you are successful in buying multiple lots, please contact us on info@exhibitauctions.co.uk to discuss a bespoke quote.

CAN I BID IN A LIVE AUCTION USING MY MOBILE DEVICE?

Yes, you can. Exhibit Auctions is fully responsive so you can search, browse and bid using your mobile or tablet device.

You can watch the live auction and bid live using any smart device, anywhere in the world.

I’M IN THE LIVE AUCTION – WHY CAN’T I SEE/ HEAR THE AUCTIONEER?

Please check that the device you’re using has the sound turned on and that the speakers are working.

If you can see the lot info but can’t see/hear the live stream of the auctioneer, a firewall might be blocking you.

You will need to allow this IP address, 88.202.231.136 over port 10817 on your personal or corporate firewall. ******

You can then test that this has worked by clicking the link below:
