Exhibit Auctions was thrilled that Philip Raskin, recognised for his mastery of depicting Scottish seascapes, was the first artist to grace our new auction platform. Full disclosure: yes, the artist is Natasha, our auctioneer’s father. Now that we’ve cleared that up, let us explain why he was also the perfect painter to inaugurate this new venture.

“I tend to paint very private places for the viewer to own and enjoy. No people, no houses, no telegraph poles; just expansive skies, mist tumbling on a distant hillside and a silence broken only by lapping water and gulls ascending.”

Lovers and collectors of Scottish Contemporary Art will know Philip’s name well; over the last eighteen years, it has become a byword not only for excellence, but for consistency too. They will know also that the rugged terrain of the west coast of his native Scotland is the drug to which he is addicted. The artist talks of painting ‘private places for the viewer to own’ and his loyal collectors, based around the globe, marvel at the way he captures cloud and suffuse light. Frequent trips to favourite locations – Barra, Jura, Islay and Arran among them – top up the memories that appear so vividly in his mind and that he is so deftly able to translate through his chosen medium.

Lot 11: Homecoming I. £1,000-£1,500. Sold.

As he began his training at the Glasgow School of Art in the mid-1960s, he could not foresee that his father’s untimely death would put his career in art on hold. Neither could he foresee that over thirty years later – almost twenty of them spent as a respected restaurateur – he would pick up his brushes once more and become such a broadly appealing and successful artist.

Philip’s work is exhibited throughout the United Kingdom and sold at art fairs in Europe and the Far East. Such is the reach of his popularity, in 2018 he was invited to demonstrate his skills to a variety of art groups and schools in Chongquing in the Sichuan province of China.

Instantly recognisable, Philip’s unique style hardly requires his signature. His portrayal of Scotland’s  rugged shores, coastline and ever-changing skies has been refined with years of practise. This is an artist at the top of his game and whose work Exhibit Auctions was proud to present.
