Exhibit Auctions’ current featured artist, Peter Nardini, is no stranger to those familiar with the Scottish Contemporary Art scene. Indeed, for the last 25 years, Peter has been exhibiting his artworks across the UK, honing a style that can be recognised instantly by those familiar with his work.

Peter’s award-winning, representational paintings cover a broad range of settings and subjects — the bandstand in Bridgeton; bathers in Lake Trasimeno, rollerbladers on Venice Beach; a band of pecking pigeons — but his cohesive palette and preferred dry brush technique make happy bedfellows of them all.

The artist’s contemporary style has evolved over the decades, and is a far cry from the work he produced while attending The Glasgow School of Art.

As he reminisced during a visit to his studio at home, ’I started art school in 1970 and, although I always wanted to be a painter, I got in with a crowd of guys that were into print-making, so I ended up doing print-making, lithography and etching. I would never have painted a landscape, for instance, when I was at art school.’ 

Upon graduating, Peter became an art teacher. Although he retired early from the profession in 1997, when painting, Peter continues to don the same apron that he wore when teaching his pupils. It’s a work of art in its own right: rigid with a quarter of a century’s worth of paint, it’s more akin to a suit of armour than it is a smock.

He still uses brushes from his teaching days, too. ’This brush here,’ he tells me, ‘I got when I was teaching. They were ten pence each at the time, so I requisitioned some and took them with me when I retired.’  

Retiring from one career to begin another was a bold and, as it transpired, well-timed choice; the moment coincided with a new wave of galleries cropping up all over Peter’s native Scotland. Since then, relationships with galleries across the UK — from the Tolquhon Gallery in Ellon to Thompson’s Galleries in Suffolk — have been nurtured and sustained. 

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been visiting Peter’s studio at home to forge our new relationship and to see the paintings that feature in this month’s auction progress. A shared love of artists such as Philip Reeves — his esteemed GSA tutor — and Edward Hopper — from whom Peter draws continued inspiration — has given us plenty to talk about. The homemade chocolate-covered chestnuts have been greatly appreciated, too. 

Exhibit Auctions is proud to present 25 of Peter’s original paintings — framed and ready to hang — to be sold by auction on Sunday 27th June at 3pm. The auction will be broadcast live online from the Arti San Toi art gallery, situated within the city’s iconic marketplace, The Barras.

The paintings will available to view on the gallery walls on June 25th, 26th and on the day of the auction, Sunday 27th June, before they go ‘under the hammer’.
